Zinc is one of the most prevalent trace minerals in both the environment and in the body. It was used as a component for industrial coatings dating back to the 18th century and toxicity in smelter employees was a concern. Zinc was first reported in plants in the mid 1800's and later that century was the first report of zinc in the liver and muscle in mammals.

Background: Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal conditioning is a vital step in the ECG signal processing chain that ensures effective noise removal and accurate feature extraction.

Objective: This study evaluates the performance of the FDA 510 (k) cleared HeartKey Signal Conditioning and QRS peak detection algorithms on a range of annotated public and proprietary ECG databases (HeartKey is a UK Registered Trademark of B-Secur Ltd).

Methods: Seven hundred fifty-one raw ECG files from a broad range of use cases were individually passed through the HeartKey signal processing engine.

Article Synopsis
  • Two experiments were conducted to study how moisture loss during incubation affects embryonic development and immune response post-hatch, using leghorn and broiler eggs.
  • In the first experiment, drilling holes into eggs to induce moisture loss led to increased moisture loss and elevated immune cell activity, including significant increases in thymocyte proliferation and certain immune marker ratios.
  • The second experiment found that chicks from eggs with induced moisture loss showed heightened immune responses when later challenged with lipopolysaccharide, indicating that moisture loss may enhance immune functionality at hatching.

Article Synopsis
  • - A century of research in Poultry Science highlights the evolution of trace mineral studies, particularly manganese, and its role in skeletal development, initially explored in the journal's early volumes.
  • - Early nutrition research focused on dietary needs and nutrient interactions, laying the groundwork for understanding how manganese affects embryonic and post-hatch growth.
  • - Current research trends on trace minerals are shifting towards gut health and sustainability, with many recommended levels being based on effectiveness rather than explicit quantitative requirements, reflecting changes in production practices since the last NRC guidelines.

By some accounts, ducks were domesticated between 400 and 10,000 yr ago and have been a growing portion of the poultry industry for decades. Ducks specifically, and waterfowl in general, have unique health, housing, nutrition and welfare concerns compared to their galliform counterparts. Although there have been many research publications in regards to health, nutrition, behavior, and welfare of ducks there have been very few reviews to provide an overview of these numerous studies, and only one text has attempted to review all aspects of the duck industry, from breeders to meat ducks.
