Introduction: Granulocyte concentrates (GC) are leukocyte preparations enriched in neutrophils that can potentially save neutropenic patients from life-threatening, antimicrobial-resistant infections. The main challenge of GC transfusions is preserving the viability and antimicrobial activity of neutrophils beyond 24 h to reduce the logistical burden on collection centers and increase the availability of this cell therapy. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore extending the ex vivo viability and antimicrobial activity of GC neutrophils up to 72 h with a unique combination of the clinically-approved additives Plasma-Lyte, SAGM, AS-3 and Alburex.

Article Synopsis
  • Phytomanagement of contaminated sites can reduce risks for nearby populations while offering ecological benefits, but it requires effective plant trait selection models.
  • A study involving three willow species explored how their traits and combinations influenced phytoremediation services in contaminated soil over 110 days.
  • Results showed that community-level traits were better predictors of phytoremediation services compared to individual species, highlighting the importance of functional trait analysis in effective ecological management.

Background: Procedural simulators can facilitate teaching and improve learning vasectomy surgical techniques. The objectives of this scoping review were to identify available vasectomy simulators (scrotal models), and to assess their characteristics and potential suitability for optimal transfer of surgical skills of most recommended techniques in clinical practice.

Methods: We performed searches up to December 2023 using PubMed and Google search engines to identify existing vasectomy simulators.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzes plasma samples from 318 COVID-19 patients to understand how RNAemia, delayed antibody responses, and inflammation affect patient outcomes, revealing four distinct patient clusters based on severity and survival probability.
  • - Critically ill patients were categorized into good prognosis and high-fatality clusters, while non-critical survivors were divided into high and low early antibody responders, each showing different patterns in antibody development and inflammation.
  • - The findings indicate that high-fatality patients have specific genomic signatures linked to severe COVID-19, and both critical and non-critical patients with delayed antibody responses exhibit persistent interferon (IFN) activity, suggesting that high IFN levels might hinder the body's ability to build effective immunity.

Objectives: Prior to the publication of the recommendations of the French Association of Urology (AFU) on vasectomy, we conducted a survey to assess current practices and required training interventions in France regarding vasectomy.

Method: An invitation with a link to a 38-item questionnaire on MonkeySurvey was sent in November 2022 to the 1760 urologist members of the AFU.

Results: A total of 352 (20%) urologists completed the survey.
