The Burden of Obesity in Cardiac Surgery: A 14 years' Follow-Up of 14.754 Patients.

Aims: The prevalence of obesity is rapidly increasing during the past decades. While previous research has focused on the early outcome after cardiac surgery or specific complications, the current study covers the whole burden of obesity in the field of cardiac surgery over short term and long term. Endpoints of the study were all-cause mortality, perioperative outcome, and wound-healing disorders (WHDs).

Age and sex differences in oxytocin and vasopressin V1a receptor binding densities in the rat brain: focus on the social decision-making network.

Oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (AVP) regulate various social behaviors via activation of the OT receptor (OTR) and the AVP V1a receptor (V1aR) in the brain. Social behavior often differs across development and between the sexes, yet our understanding of age and sex differences in brain OTR and V1aR binding remains incomplete. Here, we provide an extensive analysis of OTR and V1aR binding density throughout the brain in juvenile and adult male and female rats, with a focus on regions within the social decision-making network.

On the interplay of shell structure with low- and high-frequency mechanics of multifunctional magnetic microbubbles.

Polymer-shelled magnetic microbubbles have great potential as hybrid contrast agents for ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. In this work, we studied US/MRI contrast agents based on air-filled poly(vinyl alcohol)-shelled microbubbles combined with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs). The SPIONs are integrated either physically or chemically into the polymeric shell of the microbubbles (MBs).

Microcapsule mechanics: from stability to function.

Microcapsules are reviewed with special emphasis on the relevance of controlled mechanical properties for functional aspects. At first, assembly strategies are presented that allow control over the decisive geometrical parameters, diameter and wall thickness, which both influence the capsule's mechanical performance. As one of the most powerful approaches the layer-by-layer technique is identified.

Effect of nebulized albuterol on blood glucose in patients with diabetes mellitus with and without cystic fibrosis.

Over 90% of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients are treated with bronchodilators, and 6% have diabetes. Some with asthma also have diabetes, and most are treated with bronchodilators. Systemic administration of adrenergic agents can cause increases in blood glucose, but the effect of inhaled agents is unclear.
