Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of smoking cessation and its timing in the preoperative period on postoperative morbidity in patients undergoing surgery for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Material And Methods: Two hundred and eighty-six patients surgically treated for NSCLC were prospectively analyzed in terms of duration and intensity of smoking, time period from smoking cessation to surgery, and postoperative morbidity. The patients were divided into five groups: I - current smokers and past smokers who quit smoking less than 2 weeks before surgery ( = 67), II - past smokers who quit 2 weeks to 3 months ( = 106), III - past smokers who quit 3 months to 1 year ( = 30), IV - past smokers who quit more than 1 year ( = 71), V - never smokers ( = 12).

Technologies for minimally-invasive cardiac output measurement in patients during surgery remain little used in routine practice. We tested a redeveloped system based on CO elimination (VCO) by the lungs for use in ventilated patients, which can be seamlessly integrated into a modern anesthesia/monitoring platform, and provides automated, continuous breath-by-breath cardiac output monitoring. A prototype measurement system was constructed to measure VCO and end-tidal CO concentration with each breath.

The discovery of lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1), the first identified histone demethylase, dramatically revolutionized research in the field of epigenetics. LSD1 plays a pivotal role in a wide range of biological operations, including development, cellular differentiation, embryonic pluripotency, and disease (for example, cancer).

Most often this condition is caused by performed chemotherapy, autoimmune diseases, surgery performed on ovaries, uterus, or fallopian tubes. The aim of this study was to compare different approaches of tissue and cell therapy in restoring the sexual function in case of ovarian failure induced by chemotherapy.

Cultural competence requires more than the accumulation of information about cultural groups. An awareness of the nurse's own culture, beliefs, and values is considered by several transcultural nursing theorists to be essential to the development of cultural competence and the provision of quality patient care. Using Transformational Learning Theory, this article describes event analysis, an active learning tool that uses the nurse's own practice to explore multiple perspectives of an experience, with the goal of transforming the nurse's approach to diversity from an ethnocentric stance, to one of tolerance and consideration for the patient's needs, values, and beliefs with regard to quality of care.
