Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on the safety of frozen, dried and powder forms of whole yellow mealworm ( larva) as a novel food (NF) pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. The term yellow mealworm refers to the larval form of the insect species . The NF consists of the frozen and dried forms of the whole yellow mealworm.

The NF is a mineral salt that consists mainly of magnesium potassium trichloride hexahydrate. The information provided on the composition is sufficient for characterising the NF and does not raise safety concerns.

The NF concept was first established by Regulation (EC) 258/97 and includes any food that has not been used to a significant extent for human consumption in the EU before 15 May 1997. Synthetic novel foods (SNF) are a currently undefined group of NF without a universal definition. The objectives of this work are to perform an analysis of those currently authorized in the EU, identify their potential adverse effects and health benefits, and their health claims.

Objective:  According to the evidence, the level of glycemic control is of key importance in determining the increased risk of periodontal disease (PD). The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of metabolic control as a key factor leading to the development and severity of periodontitis and compare the periodontal and oral hygiene status with the glycated hemoglobin levels.

Materials And Methods:  The evaluation was undertaken with diabetic patients (59 uncontrolled diabetics and 36 controlled diabetics) from a patient cohort of the Hospitalar Center of Tâmega e Sousa and subjects without diabetes ( = 95).

Anthracnose caused by species is the most important disease of chayote () in Brazil. The etiology of chayote anthracnose has been assigned to the species , an important plant pathogenic fungus also reported as the causal agent of anthracnose in other cucurbits worldwide. However, there is no recent survey of the species causing anthracnose in chayote in Brazil.
