The German Environmental Specimen Bank (ESB) annually archives 24-h urine samples since the early 1980s. In this study, we analyzed 420 of these samples from the years 2014 to 2022 for metabolites of 18 phthalates and two substitutes. We merged the new data with the data from previous measurement campaigns to a combined dataset of 1825 samples covering a 35-year period from 1988 to 2022 to investigate time trends, calculate daily intakes and perform an anti-androgenic mixture risk assessment.

Article Synopsis
  • Mycotoxins, like Deoxynivalenol (DON), are naturally occurring toxins from fungi linked to health issues, prompting public health concern, especially in Europe.
  • A study analyzed urinary DON levels from 1270 participants across six countries to assess exposure and identify key factors influencing it, finding notable variances based on demographics and lifestyle.
  • About 12.3% of participants had DON levels exceeding the recommended safe limit, highlighting significant exposure among certain groups and contributing valuable data on mycotoxin risks in Europe.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2022, the International Society of Exposure Science launched the HB2GV Dashboard, a free online tool that compiles approximately 600 human biomonitoring guidance values for over 150 chemicals to assist risk assessors and managers.
  • The Dashboard includes various types of guidance values, primarily focusing on Biomonitoring Equivalents and Human Biomonitoring values, but new users may struggle to understand how to interpret these values effectively.
  • A case study on di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is presented to highlight the differences in derivation methods, quality, and confident interpretation of guidance values, emphasizing the importance of selecting appropriate HB2GVs for informed health-based decisions.

The fungicide climbazole is mainly used as an anti-dandruff (AD) agent in cosmetics, such as shampoos or other hair care products. Consequently, an exposure of the general population seems likely because many people suffer from dandruff. We have analyzed urine samples from the German Environmental Specimen Bank (ESB) for two specific climbazole biomarkers, namely (OH)-climbazole and cx-OH-climbazole, in samples collected in the years 2002, 2007, 2012, 2017 and 2022.

Based on toxicological evidence, children's exposure to phthalates may contribute to altered neurodevelopment and abnormal regulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). We analyzed data from five aligned studies of the Human Biomonitoring for Europe (HBM4EU) project. Ten phthalate metabolites and protein BDNF levels were measured in the urine samples of 1148 children aged 6-12 years from Italy (NACII-IT cohort), Slovakia (PCB-SK cohort), Hungary (InAirQ-HU cohort) and Norway (NEBII-NO).
