The independence of the slope of the left ventricular (LV) end-systolic stress/end systolic diameter (ESS/ESD) relation of preload (PL) after normalization for end-diastolic diameter (EDD), and the reliability of both the original and the normalized slope as contractility and prognostic indices, were assessed. We studied echocardiographically, hemodynamically, and with carotid pulse tracing, 25 normal subjects, 18 patients with coronary artery disease having a normal ejection fraction (EF), and 30 patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The arterial pressure was changed with intravenous infusion of phenylephrine.

The relation of clinical and electrocardiographic variables to the severity of coronary lesions in unstable angina was studied in 84 men and 8 women, aged thirty-nine to seventy-five, who were subjected to coronary arteriography within two weeks. Eighty-seven patients (94.6%) had significant stenosis (50% of the diameter) of at least one vessel, whereas 5 (5.

Pain radiated from the chest to one or both legs (17 cases), or from the legs to the chest (two cases) in 19 patients with angina or acute myocardial infarction. The leg pain was assumed to be related to the angina pectoris when both were of a similar character and occurred together, when the leg pain occurred at rest, and when there were normal peripheral pulses in the leg. Pain was felt in the left leg by 10 patients, the right leg by two patients, and in both legs by seven.
