In addition to complex spin-ice and spin-liquid states of rare-earth pyrochlore oxides, AIrO iridates have been recently proposed to host a cooling-field-controllable antiferromagnetic domain structure of iridium moments. Reliable and profound studies of the magnetic domain structure, including domains' interfaces, have been frequently limited by insufficient sample quality or lack of single crystals. We report the magnetic properties of the for-the-first-time synthesised LuIrO and ErIrO single crystals; focussing on the robust ferromagnetic component of magnetisation present in the material with the antiferromagnetically ordered state of the all-in-all-out (AIAO) type.

Rare-earthZrOzirconates have attracted considerable attention of the scientific community for their complex magnetic, electronic and material properties applicable in modern technologies. The light rare-earth members of the series, crystallising in the pyrochlore variant of cubic crystal structure, have been studied in detail. The heavierZrOcompounds have been investigated mainly from the material properties viewpoint, focussing on their thermal properties and stability at high temperature and pressure.

We report on single crystal growth of laser material Nd:YAG widely used in the applications by the innovative crucible-free floating zone method implemented in an advanced laser optical furnace. We have optimized the parameters for the production of high-quality single crystals of the size typical for laser rods. To reduce the strain and improve machinability, we have developed an afterheater to thermalize the grown part of a single crystal below the hot zone, which is a technique unavailable in common mirror furnaces.

Modulated structure of Ni-Mn-Ga-based alloys is decisive in their magnetic shape memory (MSM) functionality. However, the precise nature of their five-layered modulated 10M martensite is still an open question. We used x-ray and neutron diffraction experiments on single crystals to investigate structural changes within 10M-modulated martensite of the NiMnGaFeMSM alloy.

Pressure induced superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric CeRhSiand CeIrSicompounds has attracted significant attention of the scientific community since its discovery 15 years ago. Up-to-date, all reported experimental results were obtained employing the hybrid-cylinder piston pressure cells with a maximum reachable pressure of 3 GPa. Present study focuses on the superconducting state at higher, so far unreported, pressures using the Bridgman anvil cell and a CeRhSisingle crystal synthesized by the Sn-true-flux method.
