Article Synopsis
  • - Amiodarone, a key antiarrhythmic drug, can lead to a severe side effect called amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT), which can result in life-threatening cardiac issues, prompting the need for urgent treatment options like thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine therapy.
  • - A study analyzed the outcomes of 75 patients with severe AIT from 2014 to 2022, revealing that many suffered from critically low thyroid hormone levels and required urgent intervention due to worsening heart conditions.
  • - Of the patients needing radical therapy, 6 died before treatment, 6 underwent thyroidectomy, and 8 were treated successfully with radioactive iodine, highlighting the complexities and challenges in managing AIT in conjunction with

Objective: The monitoring of the populations' iodine status is an essential part of successful programmes of iodine deficiency elimination. The current study aimed at the evaluation of current iodine nutrition in school children, pregnant and lactating women as a marker of the effectiveness and sustainability of mandatory iodine prophylaxis in Poland.

Design: The following iodine nutrition indicators were used: urinary iodine concentration (UIC) (all participants) and serum thyroglobulin (pregnant and lactating women).

Background: Carboxylated osteocalcin (Gla-OC) participates in bone remodeling, whereas the undercarboxylated form (Glu-OC) takes part in energy metabolism. This study was undertaken to compare the blood levels of Glu-OC and Gla-OC in nonobese, healthy obese, and prediabetic volunteers and correlate it with the metabolic markers of insulin resistance and early markers of inflammation.

Methods: Nonobese (body mass index [BMI] <30 kg/m ; n = 34) and obese subjects (30 View Article and Find Full Text PDF

Incretins stimulated by oral meals are claimed to be protective for the pancreatic beta cells, to increase insulin secretion, to inhibit glucagon release, slow gastric emptying (glucagon-like peptide-1) and suppress appetite. Recently it has however been suggested that glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is putative early biomarker of metabolic consequences of the obesity associated proinflammatory state. The study was aimed to compare the release of incretins and some of early markers of inflammation at the fasting and postprandial period induced by functional oral glucose as well as lipid load in healthy controls and patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) to see if functional tests may be helpful in searching for the inflammatory status of patients.

Objective: Obesity is a key factor in the development of the metabolic syndrome (MetS), which is associated with increased cardiometabolic risk. We investigated whether obesity classification by BMI and body fat percentage (BF%) influences cardiometabolic profile and dietary responsiveness in 486 MetS subjects (LIPGENE dietary intervention study).

Design And Methods: Anthropometric measures, markers of inflammation and glucose metabolism, lipid profiles, adhesion molecules, and hemostatic factors were determined at baseline and after 12 weeks of four dietary interventions (high saturated fat (SFA), high monounsaturated fat (MUFA), and two low fat high complex carbohydrate (LFHCC) diets, one supplemented with long chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n-3 PUFAs)).
