The flow convergence method includes calculation of the proximal isovelocity surface area (PISA) and is widely used to classify mitral regurgitation (MR) with echocardiography. It constitutes a primary decision factor for determination of treatment and should therefore be a robust quantification method. However, it is known for its tendency to underestimate MR and its dependence on user expertise.

Increasing evidence suggests that dalbavancin is an effective long-term treatment for ventricular assist device (VAD) infections, with various prolonged dosing regimens currently in use. This retrospective study aimed to assess dalbavancin pharmacokinetics in VAD patients and identify optimal, feasible dosing regimens for long-term suppressive outpatient therapy. Data from Heidelberg University Hospital's VAD register were analyzed using non-linear mixed-effects modeling for pharmacokinetic analysis and dosing simulations (Lixoft).

Article Synopsis
  • DCD hearts often suffer from ischemia/reperfusion injury due to inflammatory cytokines, which can hurt their contractility, but using cytokine adsorption during blood perfusion could help reduce these cytokines and enhance heart function.
  • In the study, porcine DCD hearts were perfused with and without a cytokine adsorber called CytoSorb for 4 hours and then analyzed for heart performance and cytokine levels; those with CytoSorb showed significantly better contractility and lower inflammatory markers.
  • Findings indicate that using CytoSorb not only improved heart function at first but also led to beneficial changes in myocardial pathways, suggesting its potential to optimize

Purpose: Three-dimensional modeling and printing (3DMP) of anatomical structures from cross-sectional imaging data can enhance the understanding of spatial relationships in complex congenital heart defects. Partially due to the substantial financial, material and personnel resources required, 3DMP is not yet universally used. Here, we describe a workflow that addresses and eliminates these drawbacks.
