Five bacterial taxa are recognized to form specialized resting cells: Firmicutes, forming endospores Actinobacteria forming exospores Cyanobacteria forming akinetes; the δ-Proteobacterial order Myxococcales, forming myxospores; and Azotobacteraceae, forming cysts.
