Purpose: Hybrid cervical spine surgery (HS) is a novel surgical strategy wherein an artificial disc replacement is done with a cervical fusion nearby with a stand-alone titanium cage to combine the advantages in both procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate interactions of these devices within the same patient, and to analyze, if the different goal of each implant is accomplished.

Methods: Thirty-six patients were treated surgically within a non-randomized retrospective study framework with HS.

Article Synopsis
  • The Kaplan-Meier method can overestimate the risk of cancer coming back, especially when other events like death happen first, but the Aalen-Johansen method can give a more accurate picture by considering these events.
  • A study looked at research articles about meningiomas (a type of brain tumor) since 2020 and found that only a few used the better method.
  • It showed that not using the Aalen-Johansen method mostly led to overestimating the recurrence risk, especially in older patients with more serious tumors.

Background: Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is a disease affecting mainly elderly individuals. The reported incidence ranges from 2.0/100,000 to 58 per 100,000 person-years when only considering patients who are over 70 years old, with an overall incidence of 8.

The 2016 WHO classification of tumors of the central nervous system affected importantly the group of CNS embryonal tumors. Molecular analysis on methylome, genome, and transcriptome levels allowed better classification, identification of specific molecular hallmarks of the different subtypes of CNS embryonal tumors, and their more precise diagnosis. Routine application of appropriate molecular testing and standardized reporting are of pivotal importance for adequate prognosis and treatment, but also for epidemiology studies and search for efficient targeted therapies.

Background: Given the lack of guidelines regarding the operative management of elderly patients needing lumbar spine fusion for degenerative disease, it is often difficult to balance between invasiveness respecting the fragile spine and geriatric comorbidities.

Aim: To compare reoperation rates and clinical outcome in patients above 70 years of age undergoing Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF) with titanium rods or posterior stabilization with Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) rods for the treatment of one-level lumbar spine degenerative disease.

Methods: Retrospective review of baseline characteristics, reoperation rates as well as the clinical and radiological outcomes of patients, older than 70 years, undergoing posterolateral fusion with PEEK rods (n = 76, PEEK group) or TLIF with titanium rods (n = 67, TLIF group) for a single-level lumbar degenerative disease from 2014 to 2020.
