(L.) (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) is a key pest of pear orchards in Spain. The large number of insecticide treatments necessary for control may be an important contributor to the emergence of resistance.

A multilateral approach that includes both biotic and climatic data was developed to detect the main variables that affect the ecology and population dynamics of woolly apple aphid Eriosoma lanigerum (Hausmann). Crawlers migrated up and down the trunk mainly from spring to autumn and horizontal migration through the canopy was observed from May to August. Winter temperatures did not kill the canopy colonies, and both canopy and root colonies are the source of reinfestations in Mediterranean areas.

Newer photosensitizers continue to be sought for photodynamic therapy of bladder cancer particularly since local rather than systemic application is desired. Recent studies have indicated that a cationic dye, PH1008, a 13,17-N,N,N-dimethylethylethanolamine ester of protoporphyrin, sensitizes the photolysis of red blood cells. The study described in this report was designed to investigate the plasma membrane partitioning of PH1008 model lipid system and to compare partitioning of PH1008 in normal transitional cells and bladder cancer cells in vitro.

The ability of a photosensitizer to partition into membrane is determined by its structure and physical properties. Partitioning behavior can be quantitated as the partition coefficient (Kp) for a particular drug. This property may be an important determinant of cytocidal efficacy in photodynamic therapy.

It is not clear whether hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism associated with lithium therapy are the result of an unmasking of preexisting disease or a direct effect of lithium on the parathyroid glands. To investigate this phenomenon, parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion and cytosolic calcium concentrations [( Ca]i) were measured in normal and lithium-treated dispersed bovine parathyroid cells grown in tissue culture and incubated with varying concentrations of extracellular calcium [( Ca]e) (0.5 to 2.
