Terrestrial ecosystems have continuously evolved throughout the Late Pleistocene and the Holocene, deeply affected by both progressive environmental and climatic modifications, as well as by abrupt and large climatic changes such as the Heinrich or Dansgaard-Oeschger events. Yet, the impacts of these different events on terrestrial mammalian communities are poorly known, as is the role played by potential refugia on geographical species distributions. This study examines community changes in rodents of southwestern France between 50 and 10 ky BP by integrating 94 dated faunal assemblages coming from 37 archaeological sites.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: The long-chain omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids derived from fish, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases. Study of the associations between EPA and DHA intake and disease requires a valid biomarker of dietary intake; however, the direct measurement of tissue fatty acid concentrations is expensive and time consuming.
Objective: Because the nitrogen stable isotope ratio ((15)N/(14)N, expressed as delta(15)N) is elevated in fish, we investigated whether delta(15)N is a valid alternative biomarker of EPA and DHA intake.
To study sensitisation to minor histocompatibility antigens (mHag) before and after BMT, we measured antidonor CTL activity in five patients who had rejected their graft, and in a control group of 10 leukemic patients who engrafted without complications. All patients were transplanted with marrow from an HLA-identical sibling. Fourteen patients were conditioned with cyclophosphamide (120 mg/kg) and TBI (1350 cGy) and received a T cell-depleted graft, while one patient with aplastic anaemia received cyclophosphamide alone and unmanipulated marrow.

Up to the end of 1997, 13,500 unrelated volunteer donors have been added to the central registry in Bern in cooperation with the regional transfusion centers of Switzerland. During this period, the registry responded to over 15,000 international search requests.
