Objective. Since 1996 we have placed temporary catheters at the cervical nerve roots in chronic pain patients for the treatment of radiculopathy and complex regional pain syndrome. We investigated the possibility of placing electrodes both at the cervical spinal nerve and dorsal root ganglion for the purpose of neuromodulation.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores a new method of pain management by stimulating nerve roots in the lumbar region, as traditional spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has limitations.
  • Five patients with chronic pain issues, who did not respond to standard treatments, underwent nerve root stimulation trials, achieving over 75% paresthesia coverage and significant pain reduction.
  • All participants reported satisfaction, with four opting for permanent implantation, highlighting the need for further research on long-term effectiveness and safety of this approach.

Circulatory assist devices are used to treat patients awaiting cardiac transplantation to preserve life as well as to permit recovery of end-organ function. The efficacy of pulseless perfusion versus pulsatile perfusion in the recovery of end-organ function has not been fully determined. In this study, the efficacy of pulseless perfusion compared to pulsatile perfusion on the recovery of renal function after a 30 min period of normothermic ischemia was examined.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "M J Yland"

  • - M J Yland's research primarily focuses on advanced techniques in spinal cord stimulation (SCS) for chronic pain management, exploring various electrode placements and programming methods for optimizing patient outcomes.
  • - Key findings include the assessment of multiple program SCS in a cohort of 80 patients, contributing to evidence on its effectiveness in treating chronic pain conditions.
  • - Additionally, Yland’s investigation into the impact of pulsatile versus pulseless perfusion on renal function recovery offers insights into optimal perfusion strategies for patients in critical care settings.*
