Angiogenic growth factors have recently been linked to tissue metabolism. We have used genetic gain- and loss-of function models to elucidate the effects and mechanisms of action of vascular endothelial growth factor-B (VEGF-B) in the heart. A cardiomyocyte-specific VEGF-B transgene induced an expanded coronary arterial tree and reprogramming of cardiomyocyte metabolism.

Lentiviruses have shown great promise for human gene therapy. However, no optimal strategies are yet available for noninvasive imaging of virus biodistribution and subsequent transduction in vivo. We have developed a dual-imaging strategy based on avidin-biotin system allowing easy exchange of the surface ligand on HIV-derived lentivirus envelope.

One of the main objectives of cancer therapy is to enhance the effectiveness of the drug by concentrating it at the target site and to minimize the undesired side effects to nontarget cells. We have previously constructed a fusion protein, Lodavin, consisting of avidin and the endocytotic part of the low-density lipoprotein receptor, and demonstrated its applicability to transient drug targeting in vivo. In this study we produced a lentiviral vector expressing this fusion protein and evaluated its safety and efficacy.

No effective medical therapy is currently available for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) improves liver enzymes, but its effect on liver histology is controversial. Metronidazole (MTZ) prevents PSC-like liver damage in animal models and reduces intestinal permeability.

Earthworm communities and metal (bio)availability to earthworms along contamination gradients was studied in order to support chemical analyses in risk assessment of metal contaminated soils. Earthworms were sampled in three metal contaminated areas with different habitat and soil properties in Finland. Earthworm and soil samples were collected at three distances (1, 2, and 4 km) from the emission sources.
