Background & Aims: Skeletal muscle (SM) health has significant prognostic value in geriatric and chronic disease populations, yet its assessment is frequently omitted due to challenges in evaluation. The creatinine-to-cystatin C ratio (CCR) is a simple serum-based measure that associates well with measured SM quantity (myopenia) and strength, but evidence for its association with SM quality (myosteatosis) is limited and conflicting. This study investigated the association between CCR and computed tomography (CT) measures of myopenia and myosteatosis.

Are interventional radiology techniques ideal for nonpenetrating splenic injury management: Robust statistical analysis of the Trauma Quality Program database.

Background: Splenic artery embolization (SAE) is increasingly favored for adult blunt splenic injury management. We compared SAE to other splenic injury management strategies using robust statistical techniques.

Materials And Methods: Univariate analyses of demographics and outcomes were performed for four patient groups: observation, SAE, splenic surgery, splenic surgery + SAE in the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Program (TQIP) database.

Complement-mediated hemolytic uremic syndrome associated with postpartum hemorrhage: case series and systematic review of individual participant data.

Background: Postpartum hemorrhage is considered a risk factor for pregnancy-associated complement-mediated hemolytic uremic syndrome (CM-HUS; previously known as atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome) but has not been systematically studied.

Objectives: To systematically examine the role of postpartum hemorrhage in precipitating CM-HUS and to describe the characteristics of postpartum hemorrhage-associated CM-HUS, its prognosis and recommended management.

Methods: A systematic review of individual participant data from case series and reports in addition to a case series from our institution.

Pressure estimation of ultra-high frequency ultrasound using gas vesicles.

Acoustic microscopy uses ultra-high frequency (UHF) ultrasound transducers over 80 MHz to perform high-resolution imaging. The pressure output of these transducers is unknown, as commercial calibrated hydrophones can measure pressure for transducers with frequencies only up to 80 MHz. This study used gas vesicle nanostructures (GVs) that collapse at 571 kPa to estimate the pressure of UHF transducers at 40, 80, 200, and 375 MHz.

Medical trauma in young adults with inflammatory bowel disease: The role of trauma-informed care.

Medical trauma is a profound concern for those with chronic conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially young adults. This trauma, arising from both the disease itself and necessary medical interventions, manifests as an accumulation of traumatic experiences impacting a patient's physical and psychological well-being. The Crohn's and Colitis Young Adults Network (CCYAN) conducted a roundtable discussion involving young adult IBD patients and healthcare professionals focused on medical trauma and its implications in the treatment of young adults with IBD.
