A 73-year-old man with a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus, nephrolithiasis, and recurrent urinary tract infections caused by was admitted to our hospital. Urosepsis was diagnosed and was isolated from urine and blood cultures. Computed tomography intravenous pyelography (CT-IVP) revealed bilateral filling defects caused by renal fungal balls.

Introduction: We present a case of meningitis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii in a 46-year old non-HIV-infected patient with multiple sclerosis, treated with dimethyl fumarate monotherapy. We identified no other risk factors for developing cryptococcal meningitis.

Background: Patients with diabetes mellitus are at high risk for onychomycosis, which is related to the development of foot ulcers.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the treatment of onychomycosis with local laser therapy.

Methods: In a single-centre, randomized (1:1), quadruple-blind, sham-controlled trial, patients and microbiological confirmation with diabetes mellitus, at risk for developing diabetic foot ulcers (Sims classification score 1, 2) and a clinical suspicion on onychomycosis, were randomized to either four sessions neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Nd-YAG) 1064 nm laser or sham treatment.

Mycoplasma amphoriforme is a species closely related to Mycoplasma pneumoniae, thus far with unknown clinical impact. The application of optimized diagnostics, better capable of differentiating between these two micro-organisms, identified a significant patient population positive for M. amphoriforme.

Background: Since 2013, over 100 cases of Mycobacterium chimaera prosthetic valve endocarditis and disseminated disease were notified in Europe and the USA, linked to contaminated heater-cooler units (HCUs) used during cardiac surgery. We did a molecular epidemiological investigation to establish the source of these patients' disease.

Methods: We included 24 M chimaera isolates from 21 cardiac surgery-related patients in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK, 218 M chimaera isolates from various types of HCUs in hospitals, from LivaNova (formerly Sorin; London, UK) and Maquet (Rastatt, Germany) brand HCU production sites, and unrelated environmental sources and patients, as well as eight Mycobacterium intracellulare isolates.
