Article Synopsis
  • Contaminants, particularly from rainfall, pose risks to the health of decapods (e.g., shrimp, crabs) that are crucial for fisheries, highlighting concerns for sustainability in these environments.
  • A systematic review analyzed 138 studies, revealing that exposure to metals, PAHs, and pesticides negatively affects decapod physiology, especially in key processes like growth and metabolism.
  • The findings stress the urgent need for regulatory testing of new chemicals to protect harvested species, especially as climate changes could increase contaminant exposure in estuaries.

Migrant families face challenges to health and well-being from COVID-19. We deployed Mobile Health for Migrant Health (mHealth-4-Mhealth) to migrant families, a household-based program with mHealth-assisted at-home testing and linkages to community resources. We assessed the reach, adoption, and implementation of the program among rural migrant families enrolled in the Title IC Nebraska Migrant Education Program from February 2022 to July 2023.

This case study describes a feasibility assessment of a novel isolation care tent used in health facilities in Uganda during the 2022 outbreak. The Isolation System for Treatment and Agile Response to High-Risk Infections Model 1B (ISTARI 1B) is a single-occupancy, portable, negative-pressure isolation tent designed for the safe delivery of standard care to patients with a communicable disease, including Ebola disease (Sudan). At the request of the Uganda Ministry of Health, the Makerere University Infectious Diseases Institute and University of Nebraska Medical Center partnered to evaluate 7 health facilities across 4 districts in Uganda for infrastructure, case management, and infection prevention and control (IPC) capacity relevant to isolation care and ISTARI 1B use.

Article Synopsis
  • The study tracks changes in patient characteristics and medical care for those hospitalized with severe acute respiratory infections during different COVID-19 pandemic phases in the U.S.
  • It involves a longitudinal cohort study of 874 patients across multiple hospitals, focusing on demographics, health conditions, and treatment outcomes corresponding to different SARS-CoV-2 variants.
  • The findings highlight the evolution of patient outcomes and emphasize the need for a continuous clinical network to better understand both known and new respiratory viral diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • Urine filtration microscopy (UFM) is not very sensitive for detecting low-intensity infections, prompting a study to test FlukeCatcher microscopy (FCM) as an alternative for finding eggs in urine samples.
  • Samples from 572 children in Afar, Ethiopia, were analyzed using both UFM and FCM, revealing that FCM had higher sensitivity (84%) and negative predictive value (97%) than UFM (65% sensitivity, 93% negative predictive value).
  • While FCM shows promise for better diagnosis by detecting infections more reliably, it produces lower average egg counts (6.6 eggs/10 mL) than UFM (14.7 eggs/10 mL), indicating it might not effectively
