There is no published data regarding the financial impact of training orthopaedic residents in the operating room. No comparisons between orthopaedic faculty and residents in regard to operative time and costs are known. One hundred eleven cases of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with or without partial meniscectomy were evaluated from 1996 to 1997.

Management of shoulder dysfunction with an alternative model of orthopaedic physical therapy intervention: a case report.

One common approach to patient care in dealing with many musculoskeletal dysfunctions involves two to three patient visits to physical therapy per week over a period of weeks. Some patients may benefit from an alternative, graduated treatment model emphasizing a minimal number of office visits and focusing on intensive patient education, home program therapeutic exercise, and specific manual interventions. Patient education focuses on home program compliance and empowerment of the patient by adjusting office visits as needed based on patient progress rather than multiple patient contacts in the first weeks.

A prospective outcome study of rehabilitation programs and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

We evaluated the outcome of and compared two rehabilitation programs (clinic-based versus home) after a mid-third patellar autograft reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament. Thirty-seven patients (28 male, 9 female; average age, 24.1 years) completed the study.

Incidence of diastasis recti abdominis during the childbearing year.

This study was conducted to determine 1) the incidence of diastasis recti abdominis among women during the childbearing year and 2) the location of the condition along the linea alba. Clinicians have long noted its presence, prenatally and postnatally, but the magnitude of the problem is currently unknown. A cross-sectional design was used to test 71 primiparous women placed in one of five groups, based on placement within the childbearing year.

Disturbances of motor output in a cat hindlimb muscle after acute dorsal spinal hemisection.

Force and electromyogram (EMG) responses of the medial gastrocnemius muscle were assessed during isometric contractions in 8 decerebrate cat preparations, before and after acute dorsal hemisection of the spinal cord at the T12 level. The measures derived included the relation between static force and mean rectified EMG, the EMG amplitude distribution, EMG power spectral density, and force power spectral density. Our findings were that the spinal lesion induced modifications in the shape of the EMG amplitude distribution, a substantial increase in mean rectified EMG per unit force, and increases in EMG spectral power and force spectral power over a broad band of frequencies.
