Floodplain soils across Central Elbe River (CER), Germany, vary considerably in potentially toxic element (PTE) content. However, there has never been a comprehensive study that links PTE levels with human health risk for children and adults. Our objective was to determine the contamination of 13 PTEs in 94 soil profiles along CER and assess the associated health risk via diverse indices for adults and children.

Gel electrophoresis in combination with peptide mass fingerprinting is the method of choice for proteomic profiling of various in vitro and in vivo biological systems. In the investigation reported here we analyzed the protein composition of hepatic microsomes from untreated and phenobarbital treated rats, using one-dimensional (1-DE) and two-dimensional (2-DE) gel electrophoresis, followed by tryptic peptide mapping. To better characterize capabilities of 2-DE 1-DE with regard to microsomal membrane proteins, "ghosts" of microsomal vesicles enriched in membrane proteins were obtained and analyzed.

Thirty-one cases of sporotrichosis diagnosed in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul from 1988 to 1997 were studied. Clinical data were compared with a study concerning three past decades, clearly showing a decrease in the incidence of the mycosis, and an alteration in the profile of the infection, with a decrease of sporotrichosis in rural patients, children, women and farmers. In the past decade the mycosis was most frequent among urban adults with different professions, with the onset of the disease being associated with rural leisure activities such as fishing and hunting.
