The aim of this study was to compare the results of the day-to-day self-evaluation of sleep quality by sleep logs with Parkinson's disease sleep scale (PDSS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Actigraphy was used as an independent analysis of nighttime activity interfering with sleep. A total of 71 idiopathic PD patients and 21 age- and sex-matched normal individuals lacking any type of sleep disturbance were recruited.

April 1999
We observed a high incidence of postural and intentional tremor in patients exposed to VPA, although not strong enough to interfere with normal life. l-dopa unresponsive parkinsonism was recorded in 10% of patients who received VPA treatment. No correlation with gender, dosage, duration of treatment or concomitant administration of other antiepileptic drugs was observed.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOur aim was to investigate whether patients with epileptiform foci in the frontal lobe, as revealed by video EEG (VEEG) analysis, exhibit non-forced grasping behaviour and manipulatory movements during seizures. We retrospectively reviewed ictal videotapes of 30 consecutive patients with frontal and 30 with temporal lobe epilepsy undergoing VEEG for the presence and type of grasping and manipulatory movements. Four of the 30 patients with frontal lobe epilepsy (13%) showed unilateral grasping behaviour, three of whom had whole hand prehension (one with manipulation movements as well) and one pinching movements.

To determine the specific clinical and kinematic features of this distinctive praxic disorder, 5 patients with corticobasal degeneration (apraxic group), 5 with Parkinson's disease (nonapraxic group), and 10 control subjects were studied by a comprehensive apraxic battery, three-dimensional motion analysis of manipulative movements and motor evoked potentials. A mathematical model [quality of movement coefficient (QMC)] was applied to quantify differential kinematic characteristics between elementary motor deficits and the praxic disorder.

Final definitive diagnosis can only be made after pathological confirmation and, despite following clinical criteria, several cases are misdiagnosed. We assessed sensitivity and specificity of acute challenge with levodopa (L-dopa) to predict sustained long-term L-dopa responsiveness as a major criterion for clinical diagnosis of PD.
