- Epidemiological studies assessed the prevalence and community microfilarial load (CMFL) of onchocerciasis along the Ogun River System after annual ivermectin treatments in southwest Nigeria.
- Skin snips from participants in 11 communities were analyzed, revealing significant variation in prevalence (19.1% to 45.6%) and CMFL (0.11 to 1.03 microfilariae per skin snip).
- Despite low CMFL levels indicating potential elimination of onchocerciasis as a public health issue, enhanced ivermectin coverage and treatment compliance are necessary to achieve this goal.
