Recent trends of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Alert Hospital, Addis Ababa.

Background: Cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic to many parts of the world and has re-emerged in a number of endemic countries in recent years. Environmental changes, immune status of the host and treatment failure are the three most important risk factors associated with the re-emerging and spread of Leishmaniasis. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) ranges from localized, self-healing type to the disfiguring mucocutaneous and diffuse cutaneous type.

Evaluation of Hanifin and Rajka atopic eczema diagnostic guidelines for reduced minor criteria.

Background: Different atopic eczema diagnostic guidelines have been proposed for the diagnosis of atopic eczema. But the Hanifin and Rajka major and minor criteria seem to have got a better acceptance internationally. The aim of this study is to select those minor criteria which are most relevant to the Ethiopian situation, and eventually propose them to be used as a standard in Ethiopia.

Patch test reaction on Ethiopian subjects with eczema.

Background: Allergic contact dermatitis is a common condition with an incidence of 1-10% in the general population. An increasing number of allergens in the environment are responsible for the condition. These allergens can be identified using patch testing.

Skin diseases seen in Kazanchis health center.

Studies concerning the prevalence of skin diseases and the general dermatologic services in Ethiopia are limited. A total of 7760 patients with 9725 dermatological diseases were seen by a dermatovenereologist from September 1995 to August 1996 at Kazanchis Health center in Addis Ababa. [HIV-associated psoriasis. Clinical and histological observations in 36 patients].

Between 1982 and 1995, over 700 HIV-infected patients with different skin diseases were registered at the Department of Dermatology, Benjamin Franklin Medical Center, The Free University of Berlin. Thirty-six of them (approximately 5%) were diagnosed as having psoriasis. This is clearly a higher prevalence of psoriasis than in the general population (1-2%).
