Recurrent Heatwaves Slow Down the Recovery of a Phytoplankton Community.

Heatwaves (HWs) are predicted to increase in frequency and severity due to climate change. Yet, there is limited information about how ecological resilience of aquatic communities is going to be impacted by recurrent HWs. Here, we used data from an outdoor freshwater mesocosm experiment where a semi-natural phytoplankton community was exposed to three subsequent HWs.

Objective: Cancer places a psychological burden on both patients and their relatives. Perceived social support influences the extent of psychological distress. Our aim was to investigate associations between positive support, detrimental interactions, depression and anxiety in patient-relative dyads in the initial period after diagnosis.

Plant and animal stem cells receive signals from their surrounding cells to stay undifferentiated. In the Arabidopsis root, the quiescent center (QC) acts as a stem cell organizer, signaling to the neighboring stem cells. WOX5 is a central transcription factor regulating QC function.

A large single-center analysis of postoperative hemorrhage in more than 43,000 thyroid operations: The relevance of intraoperative systolic blood pressure, the individual surgeon, and surgeon-to-patient gender (in-)congruence.

Background: To date, there is no reliable measure for the prevention of postoperative hemorrhage after thyroid surgery. An increase in the postoperative hemorrhage rate at our institution in 2021 prompted us to look for possible causes with a special focus on perioperative systolic blood pressure, the individual surgeon, and surgeon-to-patient gender congruence.

Methods: We drew on our prospectively managed database to review 43,360 consecutive thyroid surgeries.
