Skeletal muscle plays a pivotal role in physical activity, protein storage and energy utilization. Skeletal muscle wasting due to immobilization, aging, muscular dystrophy and cancer cachexia has negative impacts on the quality of life. The deletion of myostatin, a growth and differentiation factor-8 (GDF-8) augments muscle mass through hyperplasia and hypertrophy of muscle fibers.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAccess to diagnostic imaging is significantly limited in much of the world, and sub-Saharan Africa is no exception. Clinician-performed point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) may provide increased access to diagnostic imaging for many patients in low-resource settings, but training in this modality is limited. We describe the development and implementation of a context-specific, multi-modal pilot POCUS curriculum involving hands-on instruction, in-person and online didactics, asynchronous online image review, and quantitative evaluation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFResolving the intricate details of biological phenomena at the molecular level is fundamentally limited by both length- and time scales that can be probed experimentally. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at various scales are powerful tools frequently employed to offer valuable biological insights beyond experimental resolution. However, while it is relatively simple to observe long-lived, stable configurations of, for example, proteins, at the required spatial resolution, simulating the more interesting rare transitions between such states often takes orders of magnitude longer than what is feasible even on the largest supercomputers available today.

Point-of-care ultrasound was used to reveal a large cystic mass with internal septations and numerous hypoechoic round lesions. Initial tuberculosis blood test ordered in the ED was positive with cultures ultimately growing .
