In animals, microRNA (miRNA) biogenesis begins with cotranscriptional cleavage of the primary (pri-)miRNA by the Microprocessor complex. Cotranscriptional splicing has been shown to influence Microprocessor cleavage when miRNAs are hosted in introns of protein-coding pri-miRNAs, but the impact of splicing on production of miRNAs hosted in long non-coding (lnc)RNAs is largely unknown. Here, we investigated the role of splicing in the biogenesis of miR-122, an lncRNA-hosted, highly expressed, medically important, liver-specific miRNA.

Oak gall wasps have evolved strategies to manipulate the developmental pathways of their host to induce gall formation. This provides shelter and nutrients for the developing larva. Duckweeds span 36 species of free-floating aquatic organisms with body sizes ranging from 2 mm to 10 mm, where each plant body plan is reduced to a largely leaf-like structure. As an emerging crop, their fast growth rates offer potential for cultivation in closed systems. We describe a novel UK collection derived from low light (dLL) or high light (dHL) habitats, profiled for growth, photosynthesis, and photoprotection (non-photochemical quenching, NPQ) responses.

Study Question: Does the provision of an educational animation, developed with young people, about testicular health and fertility impact the knowledge of these topics among adolescents?

Summary Answer: The development and provision of education on testicular health and fertility were welcomed by adolescents and associated with a significant increase in knowledge.

What Is Known Already: Young people may know less than they should about testicular health and male fertility topics. Lack of knowledge can have implications for health including late medical help-seeking for signs and symptoms of scrotal disorders, such as torsion, for which late presentation frequently results in testicular damage.

Breast cancer treatment can negatively impact cardiac function in some breast cancer patients. Current methods (MUGA, echocardiography) used in clinical practice to detect abnormal cardiac changes as a result of treatment suffer from important limitations. Use of alternative techniques that would offer safe, inexpensive and non-invasive cardiac function assessment in this population would be highly advantageous.
