[Differential diagnostic considerations in eosinophilia with reference to a 19-year-old patients with Löffler endocarditis].

In this case report a 19-year-old girl suffering from hypereosinophilia with 3500 cells/mm3 and involvement of the right lung, lymph nodes, skin, serosa and heart is described. Within 10 days of admission an infiltration of the right upper lung lobe disappeared spontaneously and was diagnosed as transient eosinophilic lung infiltration according to Löffler. Both lymph node needle biopsy and several skin biopsies revealed merely general reactive changes whereas a bronchial lavage produced a significant number of eosinophilic granulocytes.

Bone marrow changes following treatment of renal anemia with erythropoietin.

In 14 severely anemic patients with end-stage renal disease and chronic hemodialysis the effect of recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) on hemopoiesis was investigated. Bone marrow biopsies were taken before and after four and 26 months of treatment with EPO to evaluate quantitative and qualitative changes of histomorphology. EPO induced normalization of maturation and an increase in cell mass of the erythropoietic line in all patients.

Peripheral blood lymphocytes of nonleukemic lymphoma patients exhibit aberrant expression of T-cell activation markers after polyclonal stimulation in vitro.

The authors evaluated suppressed in vitro functions of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) as a possible tool in the early diagnosis of human lymphoma. In 13 of 22 patients with recent onset of various types of nonleukemic lymphomas (Mb. Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas of B-cell and T-cell origin) the mitogen response of PBL against phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and concanavalin A (Con A), as measured by 3H-thymidine (3HTdR) uptake, was found to be significantly suppressed, whereas the response to pokeweed mitogen (PWM) was normal in 18 cases.

Repeated mechanical trauma to the skin: occupational aspects.

Many of today's jobs involve repetitive tasks, often resulting in mechanical trauma to the skin. Trauma from pressure, pounding, friction, vibration, and penetration of foreign materials produce a great variety of skin lesions. Mechanical insults contribute directly or indirectly to a number of distinctive problems that are work related, viz, infections, contact dermatitis, occupational skin stigmata, reactions to unabsorbable materials, vibration effects, dermatoses among athletes, the Koebner phenomenon in palmar psoriasis, pressure urticaria, and cutaneous neoplasms arising in burns and scars.
