We present a case of multiple abdominal pathologies occurring simultaneously, which emphasizes the importance of keeping a broad differential and evaluating each diagnosis. A 33-year-old female presented with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Her workup included computerized tomography which demonstrated acute appendicitis with concern for a closed-loop bowel obstruction.

A 29-year-old male presented with a zone one penetrating neck injury resulting in complete transection of the left carotid sheath and its contents. The proximal common carotid artery and internal jugular vein injuries were successfully managed with vessel ligation without adverse neurological sequelae. The patient also developed a contralateral pneumothorax, which was due to an occult through-and-through esophageal injury at the junction of the cervical and thoracic esophagus.

Although the use of chloramphenicol (CAP) as a veterinary drug is banned in the European Union and many other countries, monitoring for CAP residues in food is routine. Positive detections are few, but taken extremely seriously. European Union laboratories analysing for CAP should validate methods according to European Commission Decision 2002/657/EC, must be accredited to ISO 17025, and will generally participate in proficiency testing (PT) schemes, such as those offered by the Food Analysis Performance Assessment Scheme (FAPAS®).

The peroxiredoxins (Prx) are ubiquitous peroxidases involved in important biological processes; however, details of their enzymatic mechanism remain elusive. To probe potential dynamics-function relationships, molecular dynamics simulations and electrostatic calculations were performed on the atypical 2-cysteine thiol peroxidase (Tpx) from Streptococcus pneumoniae and results compared to a previous study of a typical 2-cysteine Prx from Trypanosoma cruzi. The analyses indicate a commonality between both typical and atypical Prx: dynamic asymmetry.

Proficiency testing results for sodium analysis in foods raised concerns over the proportion of laboratories achieving satisfactory z-scores. Test materials for sodium analysis include fruit juice, canned meat meal, tomato sauce, cheese and pasta meal, and snack food. Fruit juice and tomato sauce data sets are the most problematic in deriving the assigned value with sufficiently low uncertainty to provide evaluative z-scores.
