ECN is developing a novel fabrication process for thin film silicon solar cells on steel foil. Key features in this process are: (1) application of an insulating barrier layer which enables monolithic interconnection and texturization of the rear contact with submicron structures for light trapping; (2) Si deposition with remote, linear PECVD; (3) series interconnection by laser scribing and printing after deposition of all layers, which reduces the total number of process steps. The barrier layer is essential for the monolithic series interconnection of cells, but we show that it also enables optimum light trapping in the solar cells.

In the phase diagram of the protein hen egg-white lysozyme, a region is present in which the lysozyme solution demixes and forms two liquid phases. In situ observations by optical microscopy show that the dense liquid droplets dissolve when crystals grow in this system. During this process the demixed liquid region retracts from the crystal surface.

In protein crystallography, spherulites are considered the result of a failed crystallization experiment. Understanding the formation of these structures may contribute to finding methods to prevent their formation. Here, we present an in situ study on lysozyme spherulites grown from sodium nitrate and sodium thiocyanate solutions, investigating their morphology and growth kinetics using optical microscopy.

In slices of rat nucleus accumbens, olfactory tubercle, frontal cortex and mediobasal hypothalamus exposed to dopamine (DA), the activation of DA D1 receptors stimulated cyclic AMP (cAMP) formation whereas, in nucleus accumbens slices only, activation of D2 receptors appeared to inhibit D1 receptor-stimulated adenylate cyclase at the same time. The release of 14C-ACh from rat nucleus accumbens slices, induced by 15 mM [K+], was inhibited by the mu- and delta-opioid agonists DAMGO and DPDPE, respectively, whereas only the kappa agonist U50,488 reduced the release of 3H-DA. The opioid receptors involved appear to be localized on nerve terminals, since blockade of action potential propagation by 1 microM TTX did not diminish the inhibitory effects of DAMGO, DPDPE or U50,488.
