A dilemma in behavioral brain mapping is that conventional techniques immobilize the subject, extinguishing all but the simplest behaviors. This is avoided if brain activation is imaged after completion of the behavior and tissue capture of the tracer. A single-pass flow tracer proposed for positron emission tomography (PET) is a radiolabeled copper(II) complex of pyruvaldehyde bis(N(4)-methylthiosemicarbazone), [Cu(64)]-PTSM.

Brain tumors are highly angiogenesis dependent. The cell adhesion receptor integrin alpha(v)beta(3) is overexpressed in glioma and activated endothelial cells and plays an important role in brain tumor growth, spread and angiogenesis. Suitably labeled alpha(v)beta(3)-integrin antagonists may therefore be useful for imaging brain tumor associated angiogenesis.

The technique of mass analysed ion kinetic energy spectroscopy has been applied to the structural determination of five different substituent sidechains from five steroids of similar ring anatomy. A mass spectrometer of reversed geometry, which permits ion selection according to its mass-to-charge ratio before the ions enter the electric sector, was used to isolate the ion corresponding to the mass of each particular sidechain. Subsequent mass analysed ion kinetic energy spectra of the selected ion demonstrated daughter ions whose compositions were compatible with the structures of the model compounds.
