Senescence is a key event in the impairment of adipose tissue (AT) function with obesity and aging but the underlying molecular and cellular players remain to be fully defined, particularly with respect to the human AT progenitors. We have found distinct profiles of senescent progenitors based on AT location between stroma from visceral versus subcutaneous AT. In addition to flow cytometry, we characterized the location differences with transcriptomic and proteomic approaches, uncovering the genes and developmental pathways that are underlying replicative senescence.

Sensitive and selective personal exposure monitors are needed to assess ozone (O) concentrations in the workplace atmosphere in real time for the analysis and prevention of health risks. Here, a cumulative gas sensor using visible spectroscopy for real-time O determination is described. The sensing chip is a mesoporous silica thin film deposited on transparent glass and impregnated with methylene blue (MB).

Among the acquired modifications in cancer cells, changes in lysosomal phenotype and functions are well described, making lysosomes a potential target for novel therapies. Some weak base lipophilic drugs have a particular affinity towards lysosomes, taking benefits from lysosomal trapping to exert anticancer activity. Here, we have developed a new lysosomotropic small molecule, GNS561, and assessed its activity in multiple in vitro intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma models (HuCCT1 and RBE cell lines and patient-derived cells) and in a chicken chorioallantoic membrane xenograft model.

Polymers processed to produce plastic articles are subjected to temperatures between 150°C and 450°C or more during overheated processing and breakdowns. Heat-based processing of this nature can lead to emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the thermoplastic processing shop. In water, chlorine reacts with nitrogen-containing compounds to produce disinfection byproducts such as nitrogen trichloride which induces ocular and respiratory irritations in swimming pool workers. A technical solution has been used to reduce NCl3 exposure to acceptable levels, by adding a stripping step to the water recycling loop. The pollutants extracted are currently rejected into the atmosphere without treatment.
