The NUMEN (NUclear Matrix Elements for Neutrinoless double beta decay) project was recently proposed with the aim to investigate the nuclear response to Double Charge Exchange reactions for all the isotopes explored by present and future studies of 0νββ decay. The expected level of radiation in the NUMEN experiment imposes severe limitations on the average lifetime of the electronic devices. During the experiments, it is expected that the electronic devices will be exposed to about 10 neutrons/cm/s according to FLUKA simulations.

This work describes the new facility for applied nuclear physics at the University of Sao Paulo, mainly for irradiation of electronic devices. It is a setup composed of a quadrupole doublet for beam focusing/defocusing plus multiple scattering through gold foils to produce low intensity, large-area, and high-uniformity heavy-ion beams from H to Ag. Beam intensities can be easily adjusted from 10 particles cm/s to hundreds of nA for an area as large as 2.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how the timing within sleep cycles (2nd vs. 4th cycle) and the duration of dreaming (5 vs. 10 minutes) affected the organization and complexity of dreams reported during REM sleep.
  • Reports from 14 participants were analyzed using story grammar rules, focusing on metrics like report length and structural organization of the dreams.
  • Findings showed that longer REM durations in the later sleep cycle led to longer, more complex dream stories, highlighting that the richness of dreams is linked to both timing during the night and duration of REM sleep.

This study examines stress and mood outcomes in community volunteers who undertook one week's worth of post-disaster relief work in L'Aquila, Italy, which had been hit by an earthquake four months earlier. The study team obtained pre- and post-relief work data from 130 volunteers involved in activities such as preparing food for the displaced, cleaning the camps and distributing clean linen. The Perceived Stress Scale, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Profile of Mood States were administered at the start and at the end of the aid activities.
