Developments in imaging methods used in hip arthroplasty: A diagnostic algorithm.

Background: Several imaging modalities can be used to diagnose complications of hip prosthesis placement. Despite progress in these imaging techniques, there are, as yet, no guidelines as to their respective indications.

Methods: We formed a panel of experts in fields related to prosthesis imaging (radiology, nuclear medicine, orthopedic surgery) and conducted a review of the literature to determine the value of each modality for diagnosing complications following hip replacement.

Focus on Merkel cell carcinoma: diagnosis and staging.

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare lymphophilic skin tumor of neuroendocrine origin with the potential for rapid progression. Small, localized lesions are diagnosed and treated clinically, but advanced tumors often undergo imaging evaluation. Due to its rarity, radiologists are unaware of evocative imaging features and usually do not consider Merkel cell carcinoma in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue tumors.

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma: a poorly recognized entity with mast cell recruitment and frequently associated with nasal polyposis.

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) is regarded as a rare tumor of the nasal cavity. The mechanisms driving the development of REAH are unknown, and its nature as a benign tumor, hamartoma, or reactive inflammatory process is still open to discussion. A total of 150 consecutive patients operated on for nasal polyposis (NP) were extensively checked for the diagnosis of REAH.
