Attentional capture by social stimuli in young infants.

We investigated the possibility that a range of social stimuli capture the attention of 6-month-old infants when in competition with other non-face objects. Infants viewed a series of six-item arrays in which one target item was a face, body part, or animal as their eye movements were recorded. Stimulus arrays were also processed for relative salience of each item in terms of color, luminance, and amount of contour.

Valproate in very young children: an open case series with a brief follow-up.

We report nine cases of juvenile mania, of which six began in the preschool years. We provide validation by clinical description, family history of bipolar disorder, worsening on stimulants, and considerable mood stabilization with divalproex. This is a relatively new area of clinical observation, and systematic studies are needed to firmly establish this diagnostic category in very young children.

Off-design performance of power plants: an integrated gasification combined-cycle example.

Fossil-fueled power plants typically operate below their design capacities for a large fraction of their service life. In the United States, increased fuel and capital costs attributable to this off-design operation are considerable. This article describes the reasons for off-design operation and its importance in designing and selecting new power plants.

The topical anti-inflammatory effects of a topical preparation of meclofenamic acid on carrageenan-induced footpad swelling in mice.

A topical preparation of meclofenamic acid (Meclomen) was tested for anti-inflammatory activity in a murine model of carrageenan footpad oedema. The preparation significantly inhibited swelling when applied to the carrageenan-injected paw. Maximum inhibition was observed 4-5 h after carrageenan injection.
