Article Synopsis
  • - Studies have shown that individuals recovering from COVID-19 experience lower retinal vascular density and larger foveal avascular zones, with more severe cases exhibiting greater reductions in these measures.
  • - An observational study of 104 post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) participants found that those with severe COVID-19 had significantly worse retinal measurements and cognitive impairments compared to those with mild cases.
  • - The results indicate that retinal microvascular changes linked to severe COVID-19 are associated with cognitive deficits, suggesting that more severe infections can result in prolonged damage to both retinal and cognitive health.

Older adults, particularly impacted by the pandemic, are anticipated to face considerable challenges to their cognitive and psychological health. Various cognitive training methods have been proposed to improve their cognitive decline through regular practice. Immersive virtual reality (IVR) offers a promising avenue to bolster cognitive and mental health care accessibility for older adults and has shown potential in augmenting traditional cognitive training methods.

Introduction: Adults with Post-COVID-19 Condition (PCC) may show cognitive impairments in attention, processing speed, memory, and executive function. Multimodal programs that combine cognitive training, physical activity and emotional tasks, such as mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), may offer a suitable alternative for improving PCC treatments. Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) is a promising technology that can enhance traditional cognitive training, physical activity, and MBIs.

Objective: In the present study, we aimed to assess the cognition of post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) participants in relation to their subjective sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI) and to analyse possible moderators of this effect, such as quality of life (European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions, EQ-5D), fatigue (Chadler Fatigue Questionnaire, CFQ), cognitive reserve (Cognitive Reserve Questionnaire, CRC), and subjective cognitive complaints (Memory Failures of Everyday Questionnaire, MFE-30).

Methods: We included 373 individuals with PCC and 126 healthy controls (HCs) from the NAUTILUS Project (NCT05307549 and NCT05307575) who were assessed with a comprehensive neuropsychological battery and various questionnaires.

Results: We found that PCC participants with poor sleep quality had a 4.

Objectives: Chronic stress induces preclinical changes in the metabolic, cardiovascular, and immune systems. This phenomenon, known as allostatic load (AL), can impair executive functions (EF), which may be even more affected in individuals with excess weight due to their characteristic inflammatory state and cardiometabolic changes. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contribute to AL and may influence executive functioning presumably via alterations within the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, including epigenetic modifications.
