During parasitological surveys of marine fishes and zooplankton in localities of the Northwestern Pacific coast of Mexico, 28 Gafftopsail pompano (Trachinotus rhodopus Gill) and 50 mysid crustaceans (Metamysidopsis frankfiersi Hendrickx & Hernández-Payán) we identified to be infected with adults and cystacanths, respectively of an acanthocephalan morphologically corresponding to the genus Rhadinorhynchus Lühe, 1911. DNA sequences of the small (SSU) and large (LSU) subunits of ribosomal DNA, and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox 1) from mitochondrial DNA were obtained. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that the newly sequenced individuals in a clade with Rhadinorhynchus sp.

Adults of the genus , Dubois, 1936 are parasites of fish-eating birds, mainly of the family Ardeidae, and are globally distributed. The genus currently comprises 35 species, although recent molecular evidence has shown that the diversity of the genus is underestimated since several candidate species have been recognized. In the Neotropical region of Mexico, at least 6 lineages have been detected with metacercaria stages recovered from unrelated fish hosts.

Adult specimens were collected from the intestines of three bird species (the great black hawks, Gmelin; laughing gull, Linnaeus; and the willet, Gmelin) in three localities along the Gulf of Mexico. were sequenced for the large subunit (LSU) from nuclear rDNA, and the new sequences were aligned with other microphalloid sequences available in GenBank.

Fourteen of the 15 remaining foxes were placed into an island-based captive breeding program used to repopulate the island. Although the fox population in San Miguel reached pre-decline numbers by 2010, a second decline started around 2014, coincidental with a newly observed acanthocephalan parasite.
