Vitamin E (Vit E) deficiency studies underline the relevance of this vitamin in skeletal muscle (SkM) homeostasis. The knowledge of the effectors and modulators of Vit E action in SkM cells is limited, especially in aging and chronic diseases characterized by a decline in musculoskeletal health. Vit E comprises eight fat-soluble compounds grouped into tocopherols and tocotrienols, which share the basic chemical structure but show different biological properties and potentials to prevent diseases.

The protozoan Sarcocystis neurona can cause severe disease in horses, marine mammals, and several other animal species in North America. The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is its definitive host, and the raccoon (Procyon lotor) has been considered its primary intermediate host in the USA. Although canids have not previously been identified as important intermediate hosts for this parasite, we here report several natural cases in the gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus).

Lignin is a polyphenolic polymer present in the cell walls of specialized plant cell types in vascular plants that provides structural support and plays a major role in plant protection. The lignin biosynthesis pathway is regulated by transcription factors from the MYB (myeloblastosis) family. While several MYB members positively regulate lignin synthesis, only a few negatively regulate lignin synthesis.
