Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has antimicrobial properties and is also known to stimulate the immune system. These properties could be useful for the development of a novel therapeutic or preventive strategy against respiratory infections in the upper respiratory tract (URT) such as ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) without inducing an immune overreaction. This study investigated the cellular responses of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) after exposure to CAP in a three-dimensional (3D) model of the URT.

Background: Anal fissure is one of the most painful anal conditions. Various management options are available, including topical nitrites, calcium channel blockers, botulinum toxin injection, and lateral internal sphincterotomy. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin A (BT) injection for the management of symptomatic chronic anal fissures by conducting a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis of published randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Incidence of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in different membrane oxygenators: pilot in vitro experiments in commercially available coated membranes.

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) were detected in blood samples and in cellular deposits of oxygenator membranes during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy and may be responsible for thrombogenesis. The aim was to evaluate the effect of the base material of gas fiber (GF, polymethylpentene) and heat exchange (HE) membranes and different antithrombogenic coatings on isolated granulocytes from healthy volunteers under static culture conditions. Contact of granulocytes with membranes from different ECMO oxygenators (with different surface coatings) and uncoated-GFs allowed detection of adherent cells and NETotic nuclear structures (normal, swollen, ruptured) using nuclear staining.

Subsidence and Clinical Impact of Obesity in Short-Stem Total Hip Arthroplasty Using a Collarless, Triple-Tapered, Cementless Stem.

Short-stem total hip arthroplasty (THA) has gained popularity due to its bone-sparing technique, but its outcomes in patients with obesity remain uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of obesity on postoperative subsidence and clinical outcomes after short-stem THA. A retrospective cohort study with a minimum follow-up of 24 months was conducted on 163 patients who underwent short-stem THA with a collarless, triple-tapered, cementless stem achieving fixation in the metaphyseal region.

Interaction between the leg recovery test and subjective measures of fatigue in handball players: short-, mid-, and long-term assessment.

Background: The physical and mental demands of handball during training or competition often lead to fatigue which can impair performance. Many attempts have been made to assess the level of fatigue in athletes either by objective (neuromuscular performance) or subjective (questionnaires) measures, however, their interplay over short-, mid-, and long-term periods is currently unknown. Knowledge about both types of assessments is important as load management by coaches is traditionally based on direct adjustments following a training session, adjustments of content structure of training weeks between games, as well as adjustments of load management over the entire competitive season.
