Article Synopsis
  • The project assessed the knowledge and awareness of asbestos risks among GPs in Alessandria, Northern Italy, focusing on their experience with asbestos-related diseases (ARDs).
  • A questionnaire was distributed to 216 GPs, asking about their knowledge, competence, and demographics, revealing high awareness of asbestos hazards but significant knowledge gaps between different districts.
  • The results indicate a need for tailored training for GPs to improve their management of ARDs and offer a framework for addressing public health policies in areas affected by environmental pollutants.

Although the pathological significance of myeloid cell heterogeneity is still poorly understood, new evidence indicates that distinct macrophage subsets are characterized by specific metabolic programs that influence disease onset and progression. Within this scenario, distinct subsets of macrophages, endowed with high rates of heme catabolism by the stress-responsive enzyme heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), play critical roles in physiologic and pathological conditions. Of relevance, the substrates of HO-1 activity are the heme groups that derive from cellular catabolism and are converted into carbon monoxide (CO), biliverdin and Fe2+, which together elicit anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory activities and control oxidative damage.

Objective: The diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma (MM) can be devastating for both patients and caregivers, who may experience intense suffering from a physical, psychological, and interpersonal perspective. Despite the extensive literature on caregiver distress, there is a lack of validated measures to provide evidence of psychological distress of caregivers of MM patients. Therefore, in a previous study we developed the Mesothelioma Psychological Distress Tool-Caregivers (MPDT-C) to evaluate the specific profile of psychological distress in this population.

Article Synopsis
  • Changes in cholesterol-related factors are important in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but their timing, specific links, and relationship to genetic factors are still unclear.
  • The study measured Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin type 9 (PCSK9) and specific cholesterol metabolites in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of patients with different cognitive decline stages, focusing on AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI-AD) with respect to genetic carriers.
  • Results showed that PCSK9 and certain cholesterol markers in AD patients, especially genetic carriers, could act as specific indicators of lipid changes associated with AD progression, which weren’t observed in MCI-AD patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The diagnosis of asbestosis varies between clinical settings and medical/legal contexts, where the presence of asbestos bodies (ABs) is crucial for a legal classification of the disease.
  • Identifying ABs can be challenging with light microscopy; however, other factors like work history and imaging are also important in making a diagnosis.
  • Newer methods like micro-Raman spectroscopy and SEM/EDS allow for better analysis of asbestos fibres in tissue without extensive manipulation, highlighting the need for collaboration among professionals in the diagnostic process.
