The temporality of uncertainty in decision-making and treatment of severe brain injury.

The aim of the study is to investigate how time and uncertainties of clinical action and decision-making plays out in the practical work of early neurorehabilitation in order to present new analytical ways to understand the underlying logics and dynamic social processes that take place during professional treatment of patients with severe acquired brain injury. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a Danish neuro-intensive step-down unit (NISU) specialising in early neurorehabilitation, we found that negotiation of futures takes place in the modern ICU in the present by strategically building upon past experiences. We have argued that the clinical programme therefore cannot be understood only from a "here and now perspective", since the early neurorehabilitation practice is embedded in overlapping temporalities of the past, the present, and desired futures.

Tuning the properties of regenerated cellulose: Effects of polarity and water solubility of the coagulation medium.

In this study, the effect of different alcohols and esters as a coagulation medium in the regeneration of cellulose dissolved in an aqueous LiOH-urea-based solvent was thoroughly investigated using various methods such as solid state NMR, X-ray diffraction, water contact angle, oxygen gas permeability, mechanical testing, and scanning electron microscopy. It was observed that several material properties of the regenerated cellulose films follow trends that correlate to the degree of cellulose II crystallinity, which is determined to be set by the miscibility of the coagulant medium (nonsolvent) and the aqueous alkali cellulose solvent rather than the nonsolvents' polarity. This article provides an insight, thus creating a possibility to carefully tune and control the cellulose material properties when tailor-made for different applications.

Cognitive function in adult offspring of women with Type 1 diabetes.

Aims: Maternal diabetes may affect offspring cognitive function. The objective of the study was to evaluate cognitive function and potential predictors hereof in adult offspring of women with Type 1 diabetes.

Methods: We conducted a follow-up study of adult offspring of women with Type 1 diabetes (n = 158) and a reference group from the background population (n = 118).

Creating clinical experiences in a social work agency on aging.

This article describes the growth of a relationship between the fields of social work and nursing that developed into a positive learning experience for senior nursing students. It highlights the growing awareness, complicated by the scarcity of clinical sites, of the importance of including content in curricula related to community-dwelling older adults. The author was able to prepare student assignments from a social work agency on aging.

[Prognosis in acute viral hepatitis B in children].

Epidemiological evaluations indicate an increase of acute viral hepatitis B in children. In this study authors performed an analysis of disease prognosis in retrospective trial in children hospitalized in the Pediatric Department of Infectious Diseases from 1983 to 1993 because of acute viral hepatitis B. It was documented that a risk of persistent hepatitis B may be related to the age of patients with acute viral hepatitis B in the past.
