Background/aims: The newborn screening (NBS) program in Oregon, USA, collects two routine specimens in all infants. The aim of our study was to determine the incidence of permanent versus transient congenital hypothyroidism (CH) in infants detected on the first versus second screening test.
Methods: Thyroid function was determined in infants after the age of 3 years diagnosed with CH and born in Oregon between 2005 and 2011.
In vivo study of nanomaterials is complicated by the physical and chemical changes induced in the nanomaterial by exposure to biological compartments. A diverse array of proteins can bind to the nanomaterial, forming a protein corona which may alter the dispersion, surface charge, distribution, and biological activity of the material. Evidence suggests that unique synthesis and stabilization strategies can greatly affect the composition of the corona, and thus, the in vivo properties of the nanomaterial.

Thus, patients need tools that enable granular control over what personal health information is shared and with whom within social networks. Yet, we know little about how well such tools support patients' complex sharing needs.

Managing personal aspects of health is challenging for many patients, particularly those facing a serious condition such as cancer. Finding experienced patients, who can share their knowledge from managing a similar health situation, is of tremendous value. Users of health-related social software form a large base of such knowledge, yet these tools often lack features needed to locate peers with expertise.

Resurfacing proponents tout anatomic femoral head restoration as an advantage over total hip arthroplasty. However, advances in bearings have expanded prosthetic head options from traditional sizes of 22, 26, 28, and 32 mm to diameters as large as 60 mm.
