Neurocognitive passport: A novel feedback tool for pediatric patients with sickle cell disease.

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is associated with neurocognitive impairment, and routine cognitive and academic screening is recommended. Traditional reports following testing are often not health literate, limiting the usefulness of evaluations. This study investigated whether a small "passport" summarizing results and recommendations would be helpful in increasing understanding of results and follow-through on recommendations.

Part II: understanding pain in pigs-pain assessment in pigs with spontaneously occurring diseases or injuries.

Background: Pain in pigs needs to be managed and treated to the benefit of individual pigs. It is imperative for veterinarians and farmers to assure that pigs do not suffer from unnecessary pain that can be relieved. This review focusses on pain related to spontaneously occurring diseases and injuries since this topic is often neglected.

Split-brain patients: A clinical vs experimental perspective.

For more than 80 years, the clinical perspective on the behavioral outcome of split-brain surgery suggested that it "may be carried out without any untoward effect on the patient," despite some initial and transient disconnection effects. The last 60 years of experimental studies, however, have shown quite the opposite. Using lateralized testing procedures, split-brain patients have demonstrated profound disconnection effects that can last a lifetime.

Part I: understanding pain in pigs-basic knowledge about pain assessment, measures and therapy.

Background: Pigs can suffer from pain due to spontaneously occurring diseases, wounds, injuries, trauma, and physiological conditions such as the farrowing process; however, this pain is often neglected. To increase knowledge and awareness about this phenomenon, the current article presents a scoping review of basic and new approaches for identifying, evaluating, and treating pain in pigs.

Methods: A scoping review was conducted with results from a search of the electronic database VetSearch and CABI.

Hypothesis: Young infant bone strength is a multifactorial trait.

Bone strength has been assumed to be relatively similar in young infants born at term. While prematurity has long been known as a risk factor for temporary bone fragility, few other factors have been appreciated that might predispose to young infant bone fragility. Moreover, young infants who present with unexplained fractures are often diagnosed as victims of child abuse based on alleged pathognomonic X-ray findings.
