Background: The mechanisms that determine the progression to cardiac or digestive forms of chronic Chagas disease (CD) are still unclear. We assessed the association between blood group antigens ABO, Rh, Kell, Kidd, Duffy and MNS, and chronic CD clinical forms.

Methods: Patients were included consecutively between March 2013 and April 2016.

Purpose: To verify the accuracy of respiratory muscle strength in identifying systolic dysfunction in patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy (ChC), and to validate optimal cutoff points based on respiratory muscle strength.

Methods: First, 72 patients with ChC were enrolled and underwent echocardiography and assessment of respiratory muscle strength by manovacuometry. Inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength was defined by maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the differences in respiratory function and physical capacity between patients with chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy (CC) who have heart failure (HF) and those who do not.
  • - Using spirometry and a six-minute step test, the results showed that patients with HF had significantly lower lung function and functional capacity compared to those without HF.
  • - Conclusively, the research indicates that adults with CC and HF exhibit reduced lung function, suggesting a restrictive pulmonary pattern impacting their overall health.

Article Synopsis
  • Precision medicine is changing how we treat cancer, but many patients still lack access to the necessary genetic testing and treatments.
  • A study in Spain examined how providing free RNA sequencing tests impacted the treatment of solid cancer patients who had already failed standard therapies, analyzing samples from 395 patients.
  • The results showed actionable genetic alterations in 14.4% of patients, leading to limited use of targeted therapies, highlighting a need for better access to comprehensive molecular testing and personalized treatments.

Introduction: The postoperative (PO) period after cardiac surgery is associated with the occurrence of respiratory complications. Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) is largely used as a ventilatory support strategy after the interruption of invasive mechanical ventilation. However, the variables associated with NIPPV prescription are unclear.
