Background: This study evaluated the ability of diaphragmatic excursion (DE), measured 2 h after extubation, to predict the need for resumption of ventilatory support within 48 h in surgical critically ill patients.

Methods: This prospective observational study included adult surgical critically ill patients intubated for > 24 h and extubated after a successful spontaneous breathing trial. Sonographic measurement of the DE was performed 2 h after extubation.

The clinical use of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in cancer patients has been associated with nephrotoxicity, which is greatly curbing its therapeutic application. The pathogenesis of 5-FU-induced nephrotoxicity is complex; however, oxidative stress-mediated inflammation is considered a central pathogenic factor. Urolithin B (UB), a product of ellagitannins, has recently been assigned diverse pharmacological activities due to its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Purpose: Diverted one anastomosis gastric bypass (D-OAGB) is a new procedure that entails performing Roux-en-Y diversion during OAGB to preclude post-OAGB bile reflux. This study aimed to compare the mid-term outcomes of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and OAGB versus D-OAGB.

Methods: This is a retrospective study that encompassed the analysis of data from patients undergoing bypass surgeries from 2015 to May 2021.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common form of sustained cardiac arrhythmia. The current study aimed to investigate the potential of empagliflozin (EMPA) to protect against acetylcholine (ACh)/calcium chloride (CaCl)-induced AF in rats and elucidate the possible underlying mechanism of action. Rats were randomly assigned to five groups, as follows: CTRL group: received 1 ml/kg isotonic saline; AF group: received 1 ml/kg induction mixture of ACh/CaCl (60 µg ACh and 10 mg CaCl per ml); EMPA group: received 30 mg/kg EMPA; AF + EMPA10 group: received the induction mixture concurrent with 10 mg/kg EMPA; AF + EMPA30 group: received the induction mixture concurrent with 30 mg/kg EMPA.

5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is an inexpensive treatment for colon cancer; however, its efficacy is limited by chemoresistance. This study investigates the combination therapy approach of 5-FU with Sitagliptin (Sita), a diabetic drug with potential cancer-modulating effects. The combination was evaluated in vitro and in silico, focusing on the effects of Sita and 5-FU on colon cancer cells.
