Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes bacteremia and antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacilli among patients with hematological malignancies and those undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplants across different geographic regions.
  • It includes 1,277 cases of bacteremia, revealing that Gram-negative bacilli were present in 60.3% of episodes, with a notable occurrence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) affecting 40.2% of these infections.
  • Key risk factors for 30-day mortality identified include relapse of underlying disease, use of corticosteroids, and the presence of resistant bacteria, emphasizing the high mortality associated with carbapenem-resistant cases.

This is a case of a 20-year-old female with no known comorbidities presenting with verrucous plaques arranged in a unilateral blaschkoid distribution at birth. Biopsy was consistent with epidermal nevus hence patient was diagnosed as systematized epidermal nevus, Nevus Unius Lateris type. Gold standard treatment is full thickness surgical excision however, due to the extensive involvement, treatment of this condition remains a challenge.

Purpose: Data on short courses of antibiotic therapy for Enterobacterales bacteremia in high-risk neutropenic patients are limited. The aim of the study was to describe and compare the frequency of bacteremia relapse, 30-day overall and infection-related mortality, Clostridiodes difficile infection and length of hospital stay since bacteremia among those who received antibiotic therapy for 7 or 14 days.

Methods: This is a multicenter, prospective, observational cohort study in adult high-risk neutropenic patients with hematologic malignancies or hematopoietic stem cell transplant and monomicrobial Enterobacterales bacteremia.

Few studies have evaluated the efficacy of ceftazidime-avibactam (CA) for carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales bacteremia (KPC-PEB) in high-risk neutropenic patients. This is a prospective multicenter observational study in high-risk neutropenic patients with multi-drug resistant Enterobacterales bacteremia. They were compared according to the resistance mechanism and definitive treatment provided: KPC-CPE treated with CA (G1), KPC-CPE treated with other antibiotics (G2), and patients with ESBL-producing Enterobacterales bacteremia who received appropriate definitive therapy (G3).

Article Synopsis
  • Different methods for making ranolazine, an anti-anginal drug, more soluble were explored, including mechanochemistry, quench-cooling, and solvent evaporation, leading to new amorphous forms of the drug.
  • New polymorphs of ranolazine, identified as II and III, were found to relax into a more stable polymorph I at room temperature, with its crystal structure solved for the first time.
  • A co-amorphous mixture of ranolazine and tryptophan showed benefits like a higher glass transition temperature, better stability against crystallization for at least two months, and improved solubility in water.
