Sugar Consumption Is Negatively Associated with Semen Quality.

Recently, in parallel to decrease in semen quality, the consumption of sugar has risen sharply. This provided the rationale to study the association between whole dietary sugar consumption and semen quality. Our aim was to investigate the association between sugar consumption and semen quality.

Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) attenuates sperm hyperactivity and spontaneous acrosome reaction.

Background: Sperm capacitation is essential for proper fertilization and is associated with increased sperm hyperactivity (HA) and acrosome reaction (AR). For successful fertilization, AR timing is critical; accordingly, early spontaneous AR may not facilitate fertilization. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) possesses antioxidant properties which affect sperm capacitation.

Dietary patterns are positively associated with semen quality.

Objective: To study association of semen quality with a priori whole dietary pattern indexes, which reflect real-world dietary practices and the numerous combinations by which foods are consumed: Healthy Eating Index (HEI), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), alternate Mediterranean Diet score (aMED), and Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI).

Design: A cross-sectional single-center study.

Setting: Hospital fertility center and university.

The effect of lactation educators implementing a telephone-based intervention among low-income Hispanics: A randomised trial.

Objectives: To assess whether a phone-based breastfeeding intervention delivered by lactation educators influenced exclusive breastfeeding rates amongst low-income Hispanic women in the USA.

Design: Randomised two-group design.

Setting: Pregnant low-income Hispanic women (298) were recruited from community health clinics in Los Angeles County (USA) and randomly assigned to either a control or an intervention group.
