Investigations of Staphylococcal contamination on environmental surfaces of a neonatal intensive care unit of a children's hospital.

Staphylococci species are known to cause healthcare-associated infections in neonatal intensive care (NICU) unit patients. Little is known about Staphylococcal contamination of NICU environments. Swabs from 25 of 46 (54%) surfaces sampled in a NICU had viable Staphylococcal contamination, with 11% contaminated by methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA].

Compensating Pharmaceutical Injuries in the Absence of Fault.

Adverse drug events cause significant injuries to consumers. Between half and three-quarters of these injuries are uncompensated under tort law because they are not due to negligence or fraud. This article argues that fundamental fairness and sound economics favor holding manufacturers of pharmaceutical products financially responsible for pharmaceutical injuries unless there is clear fault by another party.

Predictors of failure in infants with viral bronchiolitis treated with high-flow, high-humidity nasal cannula therapy*.

Objectives: Viral bronchiolitis is an acute infection and inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract, with infants typically presenting with the most severe symptoms. Medical management of bronchiolitis is mostly supportive. Several preliminary studies suggest potential benefit from the use of high-flow nasal cannula systems.

The efficacy of pediatric advanced life support training in emergency medical service providers.

Pediatric advanced life support (PALS) teaches skills unique to pediatric resuscitation. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of PALS training among emergency medical service (EMS) providers in out-of-hospital trauma and medical resuscitations. A physician panel evaluated all EMS run sheets of pediatric traumas and medical resuscitations brought to a tertiary children's hospital/regional trauma center over a 3-year period.
