: Antiseizure drugs (ASDs) are the primary therapy for epilepsy, and the choice varies according to seizure type. Epilepsy patients experience chronic mitochondrial oxidative stress and increased levels of pro-inflammatory mediators, recognizable hallmarks of biological aging; however, few studies have explored aging markers in epilepsy. Herein, we addressed for the first time the impact of ASDs on molecular aging by measuring the telomere length (TL) and mtDNA copy number (mtDNA-CN).

The immobilization of microorganisms in polymeric hydrogel has gained attention as a potential method for applications in various fields, offering several advantages over traditional cell free-living technologies. The present study aims to compare the efficiency of selenium (Se) bioremediation and biorecovery by two different fungal types, both in their free and immobilized forms using alginate hydrogels. Our results demonstrated an improvement in the amount of Se(IV) removed from the hydrogels of Aspergillus ochraceus (∼97%) and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (∼43%) compared to that of the planktonic cultures (∼57% and ∼9-17%).

Background: Metformin is the first-line antidiabetic therapy for type 2 diabetes in Mexico, despite recent recommendations highlighting alternatives like GLP-1 receptor agonists for individuals with obesity. Metformin elimination is reliant on liver and kidney function, and variants in transport proteins such as Multidrug and Toxin Extrusion Protein 1 (MATE1), MATE2, and Organic Cation Transporter 2 (OCT2) can influence its pharmacokinetics. Understanding these variants' frequencies in the Mexican population is crucial for tailoring personalized treatment strategies.

The Coronal Plane Alignment of the Knee (CPAK) classification is a pragmatic distribution of nine phenotypes for coronal knee alignment that can be used on healthy and arthritic knees. Our study aimed to describe the CPAK distributions in a Spanish southeast osteoarthritic population and compare them to other populations' published alignment distributions. Full-leg standing X-rays of the lower limb from 528 cases originating from the so-called Vega Alta del Segura (southeast of the Iberian Peninsula) were retrospectively analysed.

Article Synopsis
  • - Current therapies for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) have significantly improved life expectancy, but there is limited knowledge about molecular changes besides the BCR::ABL1 fusion gene.
  • - The study aimed to explore the relationship between genetic variations in microRNA biogenesis and susceptibility to CML, analyzing data from 296 CML patients and 485 healthy individuals.
  • - Results showed that the variant rs13078 was more prevalent in CML patients, while rs7813 and rs2740349 were linked to poorer prognosis and later age of diagnosis, indicating that microRNA biogenesis pathways might contribute to CML genetic risk.
