Opening the GATE: systems thinking from the global assistive technology alliance.

This paper describes international actions to collaborate in the assistive technology (AT) arena and provides an update of programmes supporting AT globally. The World Health Organisation (WHO) identifies the severe global uneven distribution of resources, expertise and extensive unmet need for AT, as well the optimistic substantial capability for innovations and developments in appropriate and sustainable AT design, development and delivery. Systems thinking and market shaping are identified as means to address these challenges and leverage the ingenuity and expertise of AT stakeholders.

Historians of science and technology and STS practitioners have always taken intellectual property very seriously but, with some notable exceptions, they have typically refrained from looking "into" it. There is mounting evidence, however, that they can open up the black box of IP as effectively as they have done for the technosciences, enriching their discipline while making significant contributions to legal studies. One approach is to look at the technologies through which patent law construes its object - the invention - in specific settings and periods by examining procedures, classifications, archives, models, repositories, patent specifications (in both their linguistic and pictorial dimensions), and the highly specialized language of patent claims.

Making things new: Invention privileges and the configuration of priority.

It was because of the early modern system of invention privileges that questions concerning inventorship became a recurrent subject matter of legal dispute. This essay focuses mainly on the details of one such dispute, namely the 1597 case litigated in the Dutch Republic between Jacob Floris van Langren (ca. 1525-1610) and Jodocus Hondius Sr.

Beyond supervised learning: A multi-perspective approach to outpatient physical therapy mentoring.

: Novice physical therapists face multiple challenges as they transition to autonomous, efficient, and seasoned therapists. Mentoring is known to facilitate growth among novice therapists; however, formalized mentoring programs within the outpatient setting are scarce or management-centered. This study sought to explore the most desired components of a formal mentoring program from multiple perspectives.

RESNA's position on wheelchairs used as seats in motor vehicles.

This position paper is based on the premise that those who ride seated in wheelchairs are entitled to equivalent occupant safety when they are traveling in motor vehicles. The document summarizes research and best practice for safety and selection of crashworthy wheelchairs with the requisite features required by the WC19 safety standard when it is necessary for individuals to use a wheelchair as a seat in a motor vehicle. Recommendations are based on data from accident and injury databases, prior research and a synopsis of the design, testing, performance and labeling requirements of ANSI and ISO voluntary industry standards for wheelchair transportation safety.
